Racing has become a very important part of my life. It takes a lot of dedication and a lot of focus but results in a real sense of accomplishment and puts me in great shape. Sharing this information helps keep my mind in the game and lets you read about my experiences :)

Taper weeks are fun! And also a good excuse :)

So this coming Sunday is one of my two personal BIG races of the year. The Chisago Half Ironman. (the other being the TC Marathon but that will be another future blog...) Part of me feels very prepared going into this race and part of me doesn't. I haven't had many "long" runs so that's really the only thing I'm worried about. Plus I'm supposed to be tapering this week and not doing as much but I don't feel like I've done enough up to this point to "earn" the taper week. But I know that it will do me no good to do hard training this week so I'm using the taper excuse to have an easier week. The Half Iron is going to be more of a mental struggle I think. I mean...we're talking about 7 hours of racing here. But luckily I'll have Rachel, Kimmi, Becca and Dana out on the course with me. Well, not necessarily right next to me but we're all suffering together so to speak :) Rachel and Kimmi (there blog links are on the right) are both training for their first Ironman in Madison in September. Believe it or not, doing this half Ironman is basically just part of their normal training schedule at this point. You go girls!
I am really hoping to get out to watch the Madison Ironman this year but there are a few kinks I have to get around. Becca has me about 60% convinced to sign up to do it next year but we'll see :)
So the 5 of us girls doing the Half Iron this weekend got together at Rachel's house for our own pasta party tonight so that was fun. We had more than enough pasta (thanks Rachel!) followed up by some wonderfully delicious Dove bars (go Becca!). So as I sit here waiting out my 30 minutes of time with my white strips on my teeth, my stomach is WAY full but I need to eat...right? I mean you have to carbo load before a big race. ;)
I have Masters Swim tomorrow provided I can drag myself out of bed. I was very happy with my last few swims, I kept some pretty tough intervals that the coach set for my lane. He's actually even toying with the idea of having me try some lane 2 work although I know I wouldn't be able to keep up with their times right now.
I have also come to the conclusion that once I get past August, I will be able to schedule in some weekly time for me to focus back on my studies. I really want to try and get my personal training certification done before the end of the year. It's going to be a stretch but I hope I can make it work. D.J. (a teammate from my Tahoe team who's a personal trainer at Lifetime) has offered to take some time to talk to me about my personal training career and what I should do and what my options are, etc. She's actually the head gal for personal training at Lifetime Plymouth so I know she's a great person to be taking advice from.
Work has been just NUTZ with Sara (my boss) being out on maternity leave since mid June until mid September. I've been trying to help out as much as I can with some of her projects but in many cases it takes me so long to get caught up on what is going on and what it's all about that I'm falling behind in my own personal projects. Not to mention my #1 priority project has ballooned into much more work than I/we originally intended so I'll be lucky to get it done by the end of the year. My original goal was end of September but that ain't happenin'.
Well I think that's all I got for now. 3 more minutes until I can take off my white strips and go to bed.

PS - I almost forgot....probably 15 or so TNT people were at the Torchlight 5k run last night. That was a lot of fun. Dana and I started towards the front this year so we didn't have to dodge so many people.....more people had to dodge us instead! We ran about a 26:14 which I was very happy with considering we didn't really prepare or even warm up for this race. It was just a fun occasion for us all to get together again :)
